The CFMTA National Essay Competition was started by former CFMTA President Dr. Lorna Wanzel. The competition originated in 2013 and provides an opportunity for creative students with good ideas and capable of in depth research, to stand out and be rewarded for their writing skills.  The topic chosen must be related to music teaching, pedagogy or performance practice and is open to all Canadian residents currently attending high school, or studying at the undergraduate or graduate levels.

The Dr. Lorna Wanzel prizes include Graduate and Undergraduate first prizes of $1,000 each, second prizes of $500 each, and a High School first prize of $500 and a second prize of $250.
