{"id":2247,"date":"2017-08-18T14:49:51","date_gmt":"2017-08-18T21:49:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cfmta.org\/en\/?page_id=2247"},"modified":"2026-03-23T11:20:59","modified_gmt":"2026-03-23T18:20:59","slug":"student-composer-competition-rules-and-regulations","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.cfmta.org\/en\/student-composer-competition-rules-and-regulations\/","title":{"rendered":"Student Composer Competition Rules and Regulations"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"pl-2247\"  class=\"panel-layout\" ><div id=\"pg-2247-0\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-2247-0-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell panel-grid-cell-empty\" ><\/div><div id=\"pgc-2247-0-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-2247-0-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_black-studio-tinymce widget_black_studio_tinymce panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"0\" ><div class=\"textwidget\"><h4>Deadline - June 1, 2026<\/h4>\n<h5>STUDENT COMPOSER COMPETITION RULES AND REGULATIONS<\/h5>\n<ol>\n<li>Only first place winning manuscripts at the Provincial\/Territorial level may be forwarded by the coordinators to the Competition before June 1, 2026 in order to be included in the Canada-wide judging.<\/li>\n<li>Eligibility - Entrants must be:\n<ul>\n<li>Canadian citizens or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ircc.canada.ca\/english\/helpcentre\/answer.asp?qnum=515&amp;top=15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legal residents<\/a><\/strong> of Canada AND<\/li>\n<li>Currently studying with a CFMTA member.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The contestant must be eligible in his chosen age group as of June 1, 2026.<\/li>\n<li>A student may enter more than one composition and more than one class, but no individual shall be awarded first place in more than one age category. The composition must be a new composition, not previously entered in the CFMTA Student Composer Competition.<\/li>\n<li>Each entry is to be the original work of the individual whose name appears on the entry form attached to the manuscript.<\/li>\n<li><b>Lyrics<\/b>\u00a0may be original, public domain, or used by permission of a copyright holder. If the latter, please submit proof of permission.<\/li>\n<li>All rights to their original work will be retained by the contestant, but winning compositions may be published, recorded and available to be downloaded for public use from the CFMTA website or employed by the CFMTA for publicity purposes after consultation with and agreement of the contestant.<\/li>\n<li>Uploaded PDF manuscripts are required. Computer-generated manuscripts are preferred. If submitting handwritten manuscripts, they should be neat and legibly written in black ink, in regulation manuscript size, including all necessary details of dynamics, editing and tempo, with the first measure of every system numbered.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Student names<\/strong> - Please remove the student\u2019s name entirely from the submission. The student\u2019s name should not appear at the top of the score, in a copyright notice, or in the name of the notation or audio file (what the files are saved as). Please note - Entries that contain student names (in full or in part) will be eligible for comments only, and will not be eligible for prizes. Names will not be removed by the CFMTA after submission. It is the responsibility of the coordinators to spread awareness of this rule, and for names to be removed completely prior to this level of competition.<\/li>\n<li><strong class=\"\">Coordinator submission<\/strong><span class=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">- Coordinators complete the following steps on behalf of the winners and pay the entry fees.<br \/>\n<\/span><b class=\"\">* Notation file<\/b> - For scores with multiple pages, please submit one PDF file for each single composition, bundling multiple pages into one document, rather than submitting each page as a single upload. File size is to be no larger than 2 MB.<br \/>\n<strong class=\"\">* Audio<\/strong>\u00a0- Optional, not required. Please share a link to the audio, as uploads cannot be accepted. Video submissions\u00a0are accepted as recordings\u00a0(for example, YouTube video links, cloud storage, google doc or dropbox), but the performer must not be visible<i>.<\/i><\/li>\n<li><strong class=\"\">Entrant submission<\/strong><span class=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">- The following information is submitted by entrants and their families. They must give their own media permissions.<br \/>\n<\/span><b class=\"\">* Address<\/b>\u00a0- student and teacher contact information.<br \/>\n<b class=\"\">* Student biography<\/b>\u00a0- should not exceed 100 words in length.<br \/>\n<strong class=\"\">* Student photo<\/strong>\u00a0- including a student photo file is optional, not required.<br \/>\n<strong class=\"\">* Extra information<\/strong><span class=\"\"> -\u00a0<\/span>it isn\u2019t necessary to provide the level of the music or a cover letter.<\/li>\n<li>The judge\u2019s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into after final judging. <span class=\"\">Prizes will not be awarded if the adjudicator feels the standard has not been achieved.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>An entry fee must accompany each composition submitted for Canada-wide judging.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"\">\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li class=\"\">PREPARATORY\u2013 $25<\/li>\n<li class=\"\">CATEGORY A \u2013 $25<\/li>\n<li class=\"\">CATEGORY B \u2013 $35<\/li>\n<li class=\"\">CATEGORY C, D\u00a0 \u2013 $45<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"\">13. To anyone receiving a prize valued at $500 and up, a T4A will be issued in accordance with CRA rules. For security purposes, the treasurer will contact the individuals for the required information prior to issuing the cheque.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>ENTRY CATEGORIES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>8 YEARS AND UNDER \u2013 PREPARATORY ($75 AWARD EACH CLASS)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Class 1\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 To write an original composition for solo instrument or any combination of instruments<br \/>\nClass 2\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 To write an original composition for voice, with or without accompaniment<\/p>\n<p><strong>11 YEARS AND UNDER \u2013 CATEGORY A ($150 AWARD EACH CLASS)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Class 1\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 To write an original composition for solo instrument or any combination of instruments<br \/>\nClass 2\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 To write an original composition for voice, with or without accompaniment<\/p>\n<p><strong>15 YEARS AND UNDER \u2013 CATEGORY B ($225 AWARD EACH CLASS)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Class 1\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 To write an original composition for solo instrument or any combination of instruments<br \/>\nClass 2\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 To write an original composition for voice, with or without accompaniment<\/p>\n<p><strong>19 YEARS AND UNDER \u2013 CATEGORY C ($350 AWARD)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Class 1\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 To write an original composition for any instrument or any combination of instruments, or voice(s) or combination of voice(s) and instruments with accompaniment when accompaniment is necessary for the performance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>OPEN \u2013 CATEGORY D ($400 AWARD)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Class 1 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0To write an original composition for any instrument or any combination of instruments, or voice(s) or combination of voice(s) and instruments with accompaniment when accompaniment is necessary for the performance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HELEN DAHLSTROM AWARD<\/strong> \u2013 An award in the amount of $250 is given annually to the best national composition as selected by the adjudicator, to be chosen from the year\u2019s first place compositions.
